Why biking is good for the environment

It also helps hold down noise pollution. Every time you take your bicycle instead of the car, you're giving the planet a much-needed break. At its core, riding a bicycle is so much fun!

It's also easy to forget that it's great exercise, too. Riding your bicycle helps improve balance, flexibility, and muscle strength. The cardio workout keeps your circulatory system in top shape. Think about your bicycle as a gym on wheels. A huge win for cleaning up our air.

And many of these will be green spaces. Areas with trees, plants and wildlife. This is important for the environment because trees and other plants take some of the ca rbon dioxide out of the air. They, therefore, reduce our c arbon emission levels and increase clean air. Better air quality and green, open spaces are not only good for the environment but they're also good for our physical health and for our mental health too.

Access to the outdoors and being able to move safely around local areas have also never been more important than throughout the Covid pandemic. An increase in demand means that local governments can work to re-design our cities and towns for the health and safety of the community.

Animals have to alter their behaviour and locations to avoid noise pollution. These changes have a knock-on effect on our whole environment.

High levels of biodiversity are crucial for many reasons. A healthy ecosystem is responsible for the quality and variety of our food, as well as the quality of our air and water. Climate change is greatly affecting the amount of biodiversity we have on earth.

As the temperature gets warmer and the weather gets more unpredictable, fewer plant and animal species can survive. Five of them are crucial and we want to highlight them here.

Changing our bad habits will bring us closer to making our lives more environmental-friendly. The first thing we will get from bike riding is the reduction of air pollution. Many people use cars a couple of times per day. More precisely, we get in our car at least two times — when we go to work and when we need to get back home.

Bike riding, on the other hand, uses minimal fossil fuels. This means riding your bike offers a pollution-free mode of transport. If you replace a car with a bike each time you go to work, you will save approximately pounds of greenhouse gas emissions each year.

Imagine that each person on this planet does the same thing? The planet Earth would be a much healthier place. Did you know that, in alone, the United States consumed around The two most common types of oil used are — diesel and gas. Can you even imagine the amount of oil we spend per day now? Fortunately, bike riders make a great contribution to the reduction of petroleum consumption. Logically, the entire planet Earth would benefit from this.

The picture of streets swarming with bikes is some sort of utopia. Every car driver knows how it feels when you are stuck in traffic. Walking or biking 1 km costs nothing. Plus it provides some — or all — of the daily physical activity you need. Motor vehicles cause a lot more wear and tear on roads compared to walking and cycling. Calmer and safer roads. More "eyes on the street.
